Commercial Boiler Ignition & Burner Faults

Commercial boiler ignition and burner faults include failure to light, flame loss and unstable combustion. Diagnosis separates gas supply, combustion air, ignition and flame detection from burner-control faults. Gas valves and air/gas ratio settings must only be tested and adjusted by an appropriately qualified engineer.

    Symptoms and possible causes

Record when the symptom occurs, which appliances or zones are affected and any recent changes. Several possible causes can produce the same display message.
    • Spark without ignition or ignition followed by lockout
    • Flame loss during modulation or peak building demand
    • Contaminated flame electrode, damaged lead or ignition transformer
    • Gas-valve operation, combustion-fan feedback or air/gas ratio faults
    • Burner controls, safety interlocks, condensate or flue restrictions
Do not remove boiler covers, adjust combustion settings or bridge safety devices. Record the displayed fault and operating conditions if safe. For a suspected gas leak in Great Britain, leave the building and contact the National Gas Emergency Service from a safe place; this booking service is not the gas emergency service.

    Test the ignition sequence safely

The engineer follows the appliance-specific start-up sequence and correlates the failure with gas, air, spark and flame signals. Parts are not interchangeable across outputs or fuel variants.
    • Review stored faults and observe permitted start-up stages
    • Check gas supply and pressures using manufacturer procedures
    • Inspect electrodes, transformers and leads after safe isolation
    • Test combustion fan and relevant burner-control signals
    • Check flame detection and combustion conditions at specified firing rates

Repair options, compatibility and post-work testing

The confirmed cause determines the remedy: repair wiring or configuration, restore circulation, clean components using approved methods, or fit the correct replacement part. Safety controls must never be bypassed as a repair.
    • Manufacturer procedures govern repair and adjustment
    • Match part revisions, fuel type, output and serial number
    • Check availability before promising an installation date
    • Prove repaired safety functions and operational demand
    • Record temperatures, pressure or combustion readings appropriate to the work
    • Investigate the original cause to reduce recurrence
Regional providers set their own rates. The quote depends on diagnosis time, boiler output and quantity, compatible parts, access, urgency and the tests required. Agree labour, VAT, exclusions and any follow-up visit before authorising work.

Separate failed ignition from failed flame proving

A burner can fail before gas is admitted, fail to establish a flame or lose a flame after successful ignition. Those stages have different causes. A displayed ignition fault may involve the electrical supply, a safety permissive, purge airflow, spark generation, gas delivery or the detection circuit. Record whether the fault happens from cold, after a warm restart, at low modulation or when neighbouring boilers start. These observations help the engineer reproduce the condition without guessing from the final lockout message.
    • 1. Establish the precise model, fuel and burner-control version, then review fault history and the manufacturer’s ignition sequence.
    • 2. Check the incoming supply, electrical earthing, external permissives and permitted fan feedback before ignition tests.
    • 3. Assess electrodes, ceramic insulation, ignition transformer, leads and connectors under safe isolation.
    • 4. Observe flame establishment and proving, checking relevant gas pressures and combustion readings at the firing conditions specified by the manual.

Flame detection, fan control and the air/gas relationship

Many premix appliances prove flame through ionisation. Electrode contamination, damaged insulation, poor earthing or wiring defects can weaken the signal even when combustion initially occurs. The combustion fan and gas valve work within a designed air/gas system; a damaged fan, restricted intake, recirculated flue products or condensate obstruction can upset that relationship. Changing valve settings without establishing the cause can make an unsafe condition worse. No adjustment figures should be borrowed from a different boiler output or fuel variant.
    • On Ideal Evomax and Potterton Sirius, confirm the exact generation before selecting electrodes, burner seals or gas/air assemblies.
    • Vaillant ecoCRAFT and Viessmann Vitocrossal require their own burner and control procedures, not settings copied from smaller domestic products.
    • Remeha Quinta and Hamworthy modular installations need investigation of shared gas demand and flue arrangements if several appliances show similar events.

Compatible components and controlled return to service

A repair can involve an electrode or lead, transformer, fan, valve, burner component or a proven control fault. OEM service parts with the correct reference normally provide the clearest compatibility trail. A pattern part must not be accepted solely because it fits; the manufacturer’s requirements and suitability for the safety function remain decisive. Reassembly may require new seals, prescribed tightening methods and a renewed combustion check. An unavailable safe replacement can prevent recommissioning, regardless of the building’s urgency.
    • Post-work combustion analysis covers the prescribed firing conditions; relevant gas tightness testing and flue/condensate integrity checks follow the work undertaken.
    • Controls verification must include ignition, modulation, flame-failure response and safe shutdown through manufacturer-approved methods; never bridge a safety chain to achieve a restart.
    • Diagnostic access, number of modules, specialist gas/air parts, seals and commissioning time determine cost. Book through ServiceM8 with the original fault text and precise appliance identification.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the fault be outside the boiler?

Yes. Shared pumps, pressurisation, external enables and BMS interlocks can create apparent boiler failures. Check the connected plant as well as the appliance.

What information helps an engineer diagnose the fault?

Send the boiler make, model and serial number, exact fault text, whether other boilers or zones work, the site postcode and access arrangements. Describe when the fault occurs rather than repeatedly resetting the boiler.

Are replacement parts guaranteed to be available?

A part must match the exact appliance model, serial number, output, fuel type and revision. Similar appearance or a matching connector is not evidence of compatibility. Availability and lead times are checked before a repair is agreed; obsolete or unavailable parts may make replacement more appropriate.

    Who confirms the repair price?

Regional providers set their own rates. The quote depends on diagnosis time, boiler output and quantity, compatible parts, access, urgency and the tests required. Agree labour, VAT, exclusions and any follow-up visit before authorising work.

    How do I arrange attendance?

Use Book an Engineer to submit your request through the central ServiceM8 booking form. The regional provider confirms coverage, competence, appointment and pricing; submission alone is not a confirmed attendance.

Does a visible spark mean the ignition system is sound?

No. Spark position and energy, electrode insulation, gas delivery and flame proving still need assessment. A boiler can establish a flame and then lock out because the detection circuit does not prove it correctly.
